DELTABEAM® Frame Composite Frame System – Frame components

The DELTABEAM® Frame – Greater Than The Sum of Its Parts

The DELTABEAM® Frame is a composite frame consisting of:

  • DELTABEAM® slim floor composite beams;
  • Composite and/or steel columns;
  • Joints between the structural members;
  • Other supplementary steel structures.

The DELTABEAM® Composite Beams and Composite Columns are connected using standardized connections. All the components work in perfect unison and are delivered on site exactly when needed.

DELTABEAM®

Build open spaces – even with architecturally demanding shapes

Composite columns

Filled with concrete on‑site, composite columns are made of a hollow steel section with a rebar cage placed inside. Available in square, rectangular, and circular profiles.

Connections

Secure composite columns and beams with corbel connections or bolted connections.

Composite Columns

The composite columns of the DELTABEAM® Frame are hollow steel sections filled with reinforced concrete. The rebar cage is fixed inside a circular, square, or rectangular hollow section and joint components such as base plates and consoles are welded at the factory.

Columns are delivered to the site ready to be assembled and filled with concrete. Standard column lengths can be up to 12 m – longer columns are available upon request.

Prior to concreting, the columns and beams of the DELTABEAM® Frame behave as pure steel members and are designed to carry the loads acting during the erection stage. Resistance of a pure steel member is considerably lower than the composite member in a final stage, but enough to carry the construction stage loads. After concrete filling and reaching its design strength, composite columns can have fire rating as high as R180, usually without additional fire protection.

Connections Between Composite Beams and Columns

The DELTABEAM® Frame’s standardized joint selection and other Peikko connection items allow the frame to be assembled safely and quickly without onsite welding. Joints can be designed to meet robustness requirements with horizontal and vertical tying.

DELTABEAM® Frame joints are usually designed with load transfer zone embedded in the concrete so that temperature development is delayed, and no additional fire protection is needed.

Joints in single-story columns and continuous beams are usually done with bolted end plates on top of lower column and bottom of upper column (as shown in the accompanying image). Vertical tying is ensured with bolts or reinforcement cage passing through DELTABEAM® and anchored to both columns. Shim plates between the top plate of the lower column and DELTABEAM® allow elevation adjustment.

A smart way to connect multi-story composite columns (ATLANT®) and DELTABEAM® is by using KONAT™ consoles. Three types of standard KONAT™ consoles enables effortless connection of DELTABEAM® and composite columns: 1) KONAT™ Robust, the strong consoles capable of handling vertical and horizontal (accidental situation) loads, 2) KONAT™, the optimal solution for wide variety of applications and 3) KONAT™ Multi, the consoles for joints connecting a composite column with multiple DELTABEAM® composite beams. Standard size KONAT™ consoles are designed by load classes which enables efficiency in all project stages.

KONAT™ provides multiple benefits:

  • Easy, fast, and safe installation of Composite Columns and DELTABEAM®.
  • A complete solution provided by one supplier (design, manufacturing, delivery).
  • Enabled compatibility with precast, cast-in-situ, hybrid, and other common slab systems.
  • Robustness requirements according to EN 1991-1-7, fulfilled by patented lock type joint solution.
  • Eurocode based design and superior technical support provided by Peikko specialists.
  • Certified production in state-of-the-art factories.

Alternatively, joints between multi‑story columns and single span DELTABEAM® Composite Beams can be formed with bolted double‑fin plate connections (as shown in the accompanying image) or other tailored solutions. Depending on the design these special joints may provide features needed for specific cases, such as higher resistance to torsion, enabling prop‑free construction for DELTABEAM® Composite Beams, etc.

Multistory column splices if possible are designed as bolted end plates (as shown in the accompanying image) – with properly designed connection, even if the columns must be propped during construction. This can be done after the bolts are tightened and the column is released from the crane, enhancing the construction speed. Elevation can be adjusted with shim plates. Vertical tying is ensured by bolted end plates or a reinforcement cage which connects two columns.

Composite column connections with foundation or other concrete supporting structures can be executed as a bolted, dowel or welded connection. Bolted connection is most suitable for fast assembly, as it ensures column release from the crane after the nuts are tightened. Dowel and anchor plate connections give the possibility to have high tolerance at construction site but require column fixing at the bottom and propping before they can be released from the crane.

Additional Frame Components

Other steel structures such as trusses, braces, and various types of beams and columns can be incorporated into the DELTABEAM® Frame delivery.

Trusses

Create column‑free spaces and load transferring structures. Trusses are fabricated from hollow or open sections.

Steel beams and columns

Use beams and columns to create technical rooms, shafts, openings in slabs, support skylights, facades or to create complex geometries.

Bracing system

Ensure the sway stiffness of the frame by diagonal braces. The bracing system provides stability from the wind, earthquake, and other lateral actions.

Shapes and Openings in the Slabs

Create architectural shapes and slab openings easily and economically.

Integrated formwork

Create custom beam shapes with integrated formwork of DELTABEAM®.

PETRA® Slab Hanger

Support hollow‑core slabs and to make openings and configurations into hollow‑core slab floors.

Connections to Other Structures

Choose the DELTABEAM® Frame to take advantage of Peikko’s forerunner connections.

HPM® Anchor Bolt

Anchor concrete or steel structures into concrete base.

WELDA® Anchor Plate

Transfer loads to concrete from other structures via welded connection.

PCs® Corbel

Achieve maximum floor height and straight mold walls.

SUMO® Wall Shoe

Create cost‑effective tensile connections between precast walls and foundations.

Safety Solutions

Always of great importance, our solutions ensure a safer and more efficient site.

Safety rails

Add safety rail mounting sockets to DELTABEAM® and save time when installing safety rails.

Safe lifting

Use Peikko lifting systems to eliminate risks associated with crane work.
